Lab-grown diamonds

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond has the same chemistry, hardness and optical properties as a natural one. The only difference is that it grew in a controlled environment rather than in the ground. It's graded on the same scale for cut, colour, clarity and carat.

How much less does a lab-grown diamond cost?

A lab-grown diamond typically costs 70 to 80% less than a natural stone of matching cut, colour, clarity and carat. That lets you choose a larger stone or a higher grade for the same spend, or pay less for the same look.

Can anyone tell lab-grown and natural apart?

Not by eye. Even a jeweller needs specialised equipment to distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a natural one, and the certificate states clearly which it is.

Natural diamonds

Do you sell natural diamonds?

Yes. We set natural diamonds as well as lab-grown ones, in the same designs and at the same carat weights, and you can choose either origin on every ring. Natural stones above 0.30ct come with a paper certificate, usually from GIA.

Why would I choose a natural diamond?

A natural diamond formed in the earth over billions of years, and its supply can't be grown to order. Some people want that history in the ring. A natural stone also keeps more of its value on the second-hand market than a lab-grown one, though neither should be bought as an investment.

How do I choose between lab-grown and natural?

Start with what matters most to you. If size and grade for your budget come first, a lab-grown stone goes further. If you want a stone that formed in the ground, or you care about resale, choose natural. Our guide to choosing between them walks through the trade-offs, and Flint can show you both at your budget.

Ordering & customisation

How does ordering work?

You choose your diamond shape, carat weight and quality grade, then the setting style and metal. Once you've reviewed the summary and signed off in writing, we begin production. Nothing is made until you've approved the final design. The centre stone is sourced after you order to at least the grade on the page — you aren't choosing one specific diamond, and the certificate follows before it is set.

What settings and metals can I choose?

Our current collection is a focused solitaire range in round brilliant cut, offered across four-claw and six-claw settings in white gold, yellow gold, platinum 950 and palladium 950.

Can you make something fully bespoke?

Yes. If you have an idea outside the collection, email [email protected] and we'll work through it with you.

Can I see the ring before it's made?

Every ring is shown at one, two and three carats with real photography, macro video and interactive 3D models, and we'll share renders of your configuration before anything is cast or set.

Can I visit a showroom or book an in-person appointment?

No. maker+stone is an online-only jeweller, so there's no showroom to visit and no in-person appointments. Keeping our overheads low is a large part of how we hold prices down.Instead you can arrange an online consult: tell us your budget, the shape you like and your timeline, and we'll come back with options within two business days.

Sizing

How do I find the right ring size?

We'll send you a ring sizer free of charge, dispatched within two business days, and guide you through measuring at home before you confirm your order. If you're buying as a surprise and aren't sure, get in touch and we'll talk through the best way to estimate it.

What if the ring doesn't fit?

Because each ring is made to your chosen size, we'd rather get it right the first time. If it's still not quite right on arrival, you get one complimentary resize within six months of delivery. You cover the postage to send it to us, and we cover the return leg.

Shipping & delivery

How long does a ring take?

Every ring is made to order, usually over three to four weeks from your written sign-off. We aim to send your design for approval within two to three business days of your order, and we'll give you an honest timeline up front so a proposal date is never a gamble.

What does delivery cost?

Nothing, and we deliver within Australia only. Shipping is free on every order, fully insured in transit, and sent tracked with a signature required. Standard delivery runs five to seven business days once your ring is dispatched, and you'll get a tracking number by email.

Returns & warranty

Can I return a made-to-order ring?

You can return a ring within 30 days of delivery for a full refund if you change your mind, even though it was made to order. The ring needs to be unworn and in its original condition, and sent back with its certificate and packaging. Engraved rings, rings we have resized at your request, and fully bespoke commissions designed outside our collection can't be returned for a change of mind.Email [email protected] with your order number within 30 days of delivery. We'll confirm the return and send instructions. Please send the ring tracked and insured: return postage for a change of mind is at your cost, and at ours if the ring is faulty. We don't do like-for-like exchanges. Return the original for a refund and place a new order. You can cancel for a full refund at any time before you sign off your design. Once you've signed off, production starts and the order can't be cancelled, but the 30-day return still applies once the ring is delivered. This policy is in addition to your legal rights if a ring is faulty or not as described.

What does the warranty cover?

We warrant every ring against defects in materials and workmanship for 10 years from delivery. If a defect appears in that time, we'll repair or replace the ring at no charge. The warranty doesn't cover ordinary wear, scratches, accidental damage, stones lost or chipped through a knock, loss or theft, or damage caused by work another jeweller has done on the ring.To claim, email [email protected] within the 10 years with your order number, a description of the problem and a photo if you can. We'll arrange tracked, insured postage to us, assess the ring, and repair or replace it.

Payment & price promise

What is the price promise?

We won't be beaten on price for an equivalent diamond ring, lab-grown or natural. If you find one for less from a reputable retailer, we'll match that price and take a further 5% off it.To keep the comparison fair, the other ring needs a diamond of the same origin as ours (lab-grown against lab-grown, natural against natural), of equal or higher grade for cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, and backed by a GIA or IGI paper certificate. The retailer needs at least ten verified reviews on Trustpilot or Google.

How do I make a price promise claim?

Email [email protected] with a link to the competitor ring and its GIA or IGI certificate before your order is dispatched. We'll reply within one business day.
In shortWe won't be beaten on price for an equivalent diamond ring, lab-grown or natural, and we'll go 5% further to prove it.

Sourcing & certificates

Do the diamonds come certified?

Any stone above 0.30ct comes with a GIA or IGI paper certificate, which sits physically in your ring box rather than living in an email. Lab-grown stones usually carry an IGI report and natural stones a GIA report, and either report states the stone's origin.

Can I trace where my ring came from?

Yes. Every ring ships with a supply chain map showing the origin of its diamond, metal and other materials. We work with Australian casters, verify the origin of our gold, and test every non-gold alloy for harmful metals.
