About maker+stone

Buying an engagement ring shouldn't feel like a test of nerve. We built maker+stone so it doesn't: well-made rings, prices you can see up front, and a process that respects your time.

Who we are

maker+stone is an online-only jeweller based on the Central Coast of New South Wales, with our rings cast in Australia and hand-finished in our Sydney workshop. We make custom engagement rings set with lab-grown or natural diamonds, each one designed in-house and built to order. We started in 2024 as Otherwise Engaged Ltd, then rebranded to maker+stone because the new name says plainly what we do: we make rings, and we care about what they're made from.Since then we've crafted more than a hundred custom rings and built a small in-house team of jewellery designers. Our backgrounds run from architecture and spatial design through to software and systems work. That mix is unusual for a jewellery brand, and you can see it in the results: proportions are worked out carefully, processes are built to be reliable, and the small details get proper attention.Every design in our collection has been developed and refined by our own designers. Today the range is a focused solitaire collection in round brilliant cut, offered across four-claw and six-claw settings in white gold, yellow gold, platinum 950 and palladium 950. If you want something outside that, we'll work with you on a fully bespoke piece.Working online keeps our overheads low. There's no showroom to maintain and no finished stock sitting idle, so when you place an order your ring is built from scratch to your specification. The money we save that way goes straight into the price you pay.

Our price promise

We won't be beaten on price for an equivalent diamond ring, lab-grown or natural. If you find one for less from a reputable retailer, we'll match that price and take a further 5% off it.To keep the comparison fair, the other ring needs a diamond of the same origin as ours (lab-grown against lab-grown, natural against natural), of equal or higher grade for cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, and backed by a GIA or IGI paper certificate. The retailer needs at least ten verified reviews on Trustpilot or Google. That way we're comparing like with like rather than racing unverified sellers to the bottom.
How to claimEmail [email protected] with a link to the competitor ring and its GIA or IGI certificate before your order is dispatched. We'll reply within one business day.

Flint, our AI assistant

Flint is the AI assistant that lives on our website, ready to help at any point in your shopping. It works whether you're just starting out and unsure where to begin, or you already know what you want and simply need to configure the order. What sets it apart from an ordinary chatbot is how much it can actually do.Flint reads from our live catalogue and current stock, so its suggestions reflect what's genuinely available. It also draws on our full library of diamond education, so if you want to know how VS1 and VS2 clarity differ, or whether colour matters more at two carats than at one, it can explain that in practical terms.Where it really earns its keep is value. Flint uses our own grading system to find the diamonds that give you the most for a given budget and set of preferences. It leans hardest on cut, since cut does the most to determine how a stone looks, then weighs colour, clarity and carat against their visible impact rather than the certificate grade alone. It watches for stones that sit just under a round carat figure too: a 0.98ct stone looks all but identical to a full carat and usually costs noticeably less. Flint raises those first, then shows you the rest so the choice stays yours.Once you've settled on a diamond, metal and ring size, Flint can build the configured order and add it straight to your cart, with the page updating on its own. It won't upsell you. If a choice looks wrong for your budget or brief, it'll tell you so, without being preachy about it. Your conversation is remembered between visits on the same device, and if you're logged in, your history follows you across devices.

The experience

Buying a ring should feel considered rather than stressful, and we hold ourselves to that at every step. Every ring in the collection is shown at one, two and three carats with real photography, macro video and interactive 3D models, so you can see how scale changes the look before you commit. There's no guessing whether a stone will surprise you in person.Customising a ring is straightforward. You choose the diamond shape, carat weight and quality grade, then the setting style and metal. After you've reviewed the summary and signed off in writing, we begin production. From there the ring is crafted over three to four weeks, quality checked, and shipped fully insured with tracking.

Value

We set lab-grown and natural diamonds, and we price both openly so you can compare them at the same budget. The two are chemically the same stone, with the same hardness, optical properties and brilliance. What differs is where they grew, and that shows up in the price: a lab-grown diamond typically costs 70 to 80% less than a natural one of matching cut, colour, clarity and carat.
What the same spend buys, by origin
Lab-grown
≈ 2 ct
Natural
≈ 0.7 ct
So a lab-grown stone buys more size or a higher grade for the same spend. A natural diamond buys something different: a stone that formed in the earth over billions of years, in a supply that can't be grown to order, and one that keeps more of its value on the second-hand market. Neither is an investment, and neither is the wrong choice. We'll show you both and let you weigh them.Whichever you choose, the way we've set the business up keeps the price down: no showrooms, no retail middlemen, a focused collection, and everything made to order so nothing sits in storage. What we save in running the business, we pass through to the price of the ring.

Sourcing

You can trace every part of a maker+stone ring. Our lab-grown diamonds come from verified growers and our natural diamonds from established diamond suppliers. Any stone above 0.30ct, of either origin, arrives with a GIA or IGI paper certificate that states its origin and sits physically in your ring box rather than living in an email. We work with Australian casters and verify the origin of our gold through reputable sources. Every non-gold alloy is tested to make sure no undesirable or harmful metals are present. Each ring ships with a supply chain map showing where its diamond, metal and other materials came from, so you know the origin of the ring and not just where it was assembled. This matters because the jewellery trade has long been vague about sourcing. That vagueness was part of why we started maker+stone, and traceability has been built into how we work from the beginning rather than bolted on later.

Why maker+stone

Traditional jewellery retail carries a lot of cost that has nothing to do with the ring itself: showroom leases, floor staff, finished stock, and the margin each link in the supply chain takes. By the time a ring reaches you through a conventional retailer, you've paid for all of it.We're built differently. We sell online, make each ring to order, keep a focused collection we know inside out, and deal directly with our designers, casters and diamond suppliers. The result is a carefully made ring at a fair price, with a clear record of where every part of it came from. We're honest about who we're not for. If you want to try rings on in a showroom, or you need something in a hurry, we probably aren't the right fit: our lead time is three to four weeks and we operate entirely online. But if you want a well-made custom ring at a fair price, with a process that's clear from start to finish, we think we're worth your time.
