How big are the famous engagement rings, really?

Every carat figure you have read about Taylor Swift's ring is somebody squinting at a photograph. Here are the numbers, where they came from, how far apart the guesses are, and what all six stones look like drawn side by side at their actual size.

Drawings show the cut, not the scale. Weights are the figures most widely reported for each ring, and only Miley Cyrus's came from the jeweller. Prices are as reported in United States dollars in the year given, not converted and not adjusted.

Taylor Swift's diamond

Most of the trade puts it at 8 to 10 carats. Travis Kelce proposed in August 2025 with a ring he designed alongside Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry in New York, and the centre stone is an elongated old mine brilliant: an antique cushion, bezel-set in 18-carat yellow gold on a hand-engraved band with four corner claws and small burnished stones down the shoulders. Valuations published at the time ran from about US$400,000 to about US$1 million. The cut is the part worth understanding, because it is doing more work than the weight. Old mine brilliants were cut by hand in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, before anyone had worked out the proportions that maximise light return. They have fewer, bigger facets, a small flat table and a high crown, so instead of the fast white glitter of a modern round they throw a slower, larger flash. Stephanie Gottlieb noted how unusually elongated this one is for a cushion. The Clear Cut went further and called it spready, meaning it is cut shallow, which makes a stone look wider than its weight suggests and lets you see straight through parts of it.That last point is why the estimates disagree so violently. A spready stone faces up large for its carat weight, so if you are working backwards from a photograph you will overshoot. The Clear Cut's guess of four to seven carats and Only Natural Diamonds' guess of ten are looking at the same picture and disagreeing about how deep the stone is, which is not something a photograph can tell you.
What Swift's ring actually startedThe interesting thing about that ring is not its size. It is that the most photographed engagement ring in the world is a second-hand stone. Antique cuts had been quietly gaining ground for years, and this put them on every front page. If you want that look, you are shopping for something old or for a modern stone deliberately cut to behave like one, and both are a different errand from buying a well-cut modern brilliant.

Nobody has weighed any of these

Worth saying plainly before the numbers pile up. Not one of these stones has been on a scale in public. Every figure in this article except Miley Cyrus's comes from a jeweller looking at a press photograph, comparing the stone against the width of a knuckle, and estimating. They are professionals and their guesses are educated, but a guess from a photograph cannot see depth, and depth is half of what carat weight measures.
How far apart the published carat guesses areEach band spans the lowest and highest expert estimate we could find. The dark line is the figure the trade press settled on.
Lady Gaga8 to 20 ct
Steven Stone read it as 8 carats from the Venice photographs. Rare Carat allowed for 20. That is a range you could drive a car through.
Taylor Swift4 to 13 ct
The Clear Cut went as low as 4 to 7 on the grounds that the stone looks spready. The Hollywood Reporter's source said 13. Most of the trade settled at 8 to 10.
Melania Trump10 to 15 ct
Reported as 15 carats when Graff sold it in 2005. Forbes, going back over it years later, described it as approximately 10.
Miley Cyrus3.5 ct, not disputed
The only figure on this page that came from the person who made the ring. Neil Lane told PEOPLE it was 3.5 carats, so there is nothing to argue about.
Meghan Markle2.5 to 3 ct
A narrow range, because a trilogy ring gives you two known side stones to measure the centre against.
Estimates as published by The Clear Cut, Stephanie Gottlieb Fine Jewelry, Lauren B, Rare Carat, Abelini, Only Natural Diamonds and The Diamond Pro, collected by Page Six Style, NBC News and Today between 2024 and 2025; Forbes on the Trump ring; Neil Lane speaking to PEOPLE in 2012. Where a source gave a single number rather than a range, that number is used for both ends of its own contribution to the band.
Lady Gaga's band is the one to look at. The low guess and the high guess are eight carats apart, which in dollars is the difference between a very good house in Geelong and a very good house in Toorak. Whenever you read a confident carat figure about a celebrity ring, somebody has picked one end of a band like that and dropped the rest.

Carat, karat and ring size are three different numbers

People search for the karat of Taylor Swift's ring and for its size, and both questions have answers, just not the ones the words suggest. Three separate measurements get collapsed into one, so here they are apart.Carat is the weight of the diamond, at 0.2 of a gram each. Swift's stone is roughly 8 to 10 carats, so somewhere near two grams of crystal.Karat is the purity of the gold and has nothing to do with the stone. Swift's band is 18-carat yellow gold, which is 75 per cent gold by weight, the standard for fine jewellery in Australia and the alloy we use. So the answer to what karat her ring is happens to be 18, and it is the least interesting fact about it.Ring size is the circumference of her finger, and nobody outside her family knows it. Estimates float around a US size 6, which is an Australian L and a 16.5 millimetre inside diameter, but that is a number worked out from a photograph of a hand and worth nothing.
Why the confusion is expensiveA jeweller who says “18 karat” and a jeweller who says “18 carat” mean the same thing about gold. Australia spells it with a c for both and the American trade splits them, which is where the mix-up comes from. It matters when you are reading a quote: three carats of centre stone and 18 carats of gold are two numbers that must both be on the invoice, and swapping them makes a nine carat gold ring sound like a diamond.
If the question you actually have is what size finger the ring in your pocket needs to fit, that is a solvable problem and we have written it up in our guide to finding her size without asking.

Melania Trump's 15 carats

Fifteen carats, emerald cut, D colour and flawless, made by Graff, and given in 2005 ahead of the wedding at Mar-a-Lago in January of that year. D flawless is the top of both the colour and the clarity scales, which at fifteen carats is a genuinely rare combination and is where most of the money went. Donald Trump told the New York Times he had been given a fifty per cent discount on a US$1.5 million ring. Laurence Graff later told Forbes there had been no favours and no publicity discount, and Graff's chief financial officer added that the company does not sell items for publicity value. Forbes also described the stone as approximately ten carats rather than fifteen. The reason this ring is worth a paragraph in a buying guide is what the emerald cut does to size. An emerald cut is a step cut: long parallel facets, a large open table, and most of its weight carried in depth rather than spread across the top. Drawn face up, fifteen carats of emerald cut is about the same width and length as ten carats of oval. You can see that further down, where they sit side by side. Five carats of diamond, worth several hundred thousand dollars, disappear into the third dimension.Trump gave her a second ring for their tenth anniversary in 2015, a 25 carat emerald cut flanked by two baguettes on white gold, reported at around US$3 million. The gemmologist Alexandra Michell made the point that the larger ring is probably the less valuable of the two, because the fifteen carat is D flawless and quality outruns weight at the top of the market. It is the clearest illustration you will find that carat weight is one of four numbers, and on its own the least informative. Our guide to the four Cs covers the other three.

Lady Gaga's oval

Somewhere between 8 and 20 carats, and that is the most honest answer available. Michael Polansky proposed on 1 April 2024 on a rock climbing trip, and the story of the proposal is better than the ring specification: Gaga had once told him that if he ever asked, he could wrap a blade of grass from their garden round her finger. He did exactly that, setting a blade of grass in resin, and gave her the diamond separately. She has said she loves them both. She wore the diamond in public for the first time at the Venice Film Festival that September. The ring itself is an oval-cut diamond on an 18-carat white and rose gold pavé band, set with natural pink diamonds that graduate in colour along the shank, with a hidden halo of white diamonds tucked under the centre stone. Sofia Jewelry, a studio in Mill Valley in California, did the original design. Maxwell Stone at Steven Stone read the centre stone as eight carats and put the ring at about US$500,000. Mike Fried at The Diamond Pro said at least twelve and about a million. Rare Carat allowed that at twenty carats it would be nearer two million.
The hidden halo, which you can actually copyA ring of small diamonds set in a collar underneath the centre stone, invisible from above and visible from the side. It lifts the stone, throws light back up into it, and adds a line of sparkle in profile without making the stone look haloed from the top. It costs a few hundred dollars on an Australian ring rather than the several hundred thousand the centre stone costs, and it is the single most transferable idea on this page.

Miley Cyrus's antique

3.5 carats, and this is the one figure on the page you can trust, because Neil Lane gave it to PEOPLE himself in 2012. Liam Hemsworth, who is Australian, went to Lane asking for something unusual and romantic. What he got was a cushion-cut diamond hand-cut around 1880 or 1890, never recut, set in 18-carat yellow gold with carved diamond floral work in an art nouveau pattern. Lane sculpted the setting to fit the particular shape of that stone rather than the reverse, which is the part a jeweller notices. Two things about it stood out at the time and look prescient now. Yellow gold was out of fashion in 2012, when white metals and halos were what sold, and an antique hand-cut centre stone in a young couple's ring was close to unheard of. Thirteen years later Swift's ring is a hand-cut antique in yellow gold and everybody calls it a trend. It is also, at 3.5 carats, by far the smallest ring on this page apart from Meghan Markle's, and the one most people would name if you asked them to think of a famous engagement ring. Which is the useful lesson. A stone that reads as unmistakably large in every photograph ever taken of it is 3.5 carats and about 8.8 millimetres across.

Meghan Markle's three stones

A trilogy ring: a cushion-cut centre stone of roughly three carats, flanked by two round brilliants. Prince Harry designed it himself through Cleave & Company, the late Queen's jeweller, and announced the engagement in November 2017. The cut most people ask about is the centre one, and it is a cushion, not the emerald or oval it is sometimes described as. Total weight across all three stones is usually put at about 3.8 carats, with the finished ring estimated at US$300,000 to US$350,000.The stones are the point rather than the specification. Harry sourced the centre diamond from Botswana, where he and Meghan had taken their first trip together, and took the two side stones from his mother's personal jewellery collection so that Diana would be in the ring. He explained the yellow gold in the BBC engagement interview with one line: it is her favourite. In 2019 he had Lorraine Schwartz replace that plain gold band with a thin micro-pavé one, and commissioned an eternity ring set on the inside with peridot, emerald and sapphire for his own, Meghan's and Archie's birthdays.
Why a trilogy narrows the guessingEstimates for Meghan's centre stone sit in a tight band of 2.5 to 3 carats, while Lady Gaga's spans eight carats. The reason is geometry. Side stones give a valuer a known reference inside the photograph, so the centre can be measured against them instead of against a finger. A solitaire hands you nothing to compare against, which is exactly why solitaire estimates are the wildest.
For what it is worth, this is the ring we get asked to interpret more than any other. Almost nobody asking wants three carats from Botswana. They want a warm gold trilogy with a cushion in the middle, and that is a ring you can have for a low four-figure sum in lab-grown, with the side stones matched properly rather than approximately.

All of them, drawn to one scale

Carat figures are hard to picture and easy to misjudge, because weight does not scale with width. Doubling the carats makes a stone about 26 per cent wider, not twice as wide. So here is every stone in this article drawn at its real face-up millimetre size, standing on the same line, with a one carat and a two carat round for reference.
Six famous stones and two ordinary ones, at actual relative sizeFace-up outlines only. Gold is a famous ring, grey is a reference stone.

2 ct round8.1 mm
Meghan Markle≈3 ct cushion
Miley Cyrus3.5 ct cushion
Taylor Swift≈9 ct old mine
Lady Gaga≈10 ct oval

Widths and lengths are modelled from typical face-up dimensions for each weight and cut, using the mid-point of the published estimate where the weight is disputed. None of these stones has been measured publicly, and an old mine or emerald cut can face up several per cent wider or narrower than its weight implies depending on how deep it was cut. Reference rounds use standard proportions for a well-cut modern brilliant.
Three things fall out of the picture. Melania Trump's fifteen carat emerald cut and Lady Gaga's ten carat oval cover almost the same area of finger, because step cuts hide their weight in depth. Meghan Markle's three carats and Miley Cyrus's 3.5 carats are barely a millimetre wider than an ordinary two carat round, and anyone who has held a two carat knows it already looks big. And Mariah Carey's 35 carats is not five times the width of a two carat. It is under three times, for around a hundred times the money. The gap between the two reference stones on the left and the four on the right is the whole reason celebrity rings are bad shopping references. Nothing in that upper range is a decision anyone makes on a budget. If you want to see how the money maps to millimetres at real Australian numbers, that is what our budget guide is for.

Who owns the most expensive engagement ring in the world

By most accountings, Mariah Carey does not any more, and the story of why is the most useful thing in this article. James Packer, the Australian billionaire, proposed in January 2016 with a 35 carat emerald cut flanked by two one carat baguettes, set in platinum and designed by Carey's friend Wilfredo Rosado. Estimates ran from about US$4 million to about US$10 million, and the ten million figure is the one that made it into every list of the most expensive engagement ring ever given. Carey joked that she could not lift her arm.The engagement ended that October. In 2018 she sold the ring to a private jeweller, and the reported figure was about US$2.1 million.

A fifth of the top estimate. On the most exceptional stone in this article, in the strongest possible market for a large diamond, with genuine celebrity provenance attached. That is not a comment on Packer, on Carey, or on the ring, which was extraordinary. It is what retail jewellery does the moment it stops being new, and the reason we tell people not to think of any engagement ring as an asset. We go through what that looks like at ordinary Australian prices in our guide to what a diamond sells for used.
If you want the strict answerLists of the most expensive engagement rings move around, because private sales are not published and estimates are elastic. Carey's 35 carat is the one most often named at the top. Elizabeth Taylor's 33.19 carat Asscher-cut Krupp diamond, given by Richard Burton, is worth more today than either ring cost, having sold at auction after her death. Anyone quoting you a precise ranking is quoting a press estimate, not a receipt.

What to take from a famous ring

We sell engagement rings, so read the following knowing that. The honest position is that these rings are the best possible source of ideas and the worst possible source of benchmarks, and the two get confused constantly.
A solitaire engagement ring on a hand resting on a shoulder
What survives the transfer from a red carpet to a real hand is the cut, the metal and the proportions. Never the carat weight.
What transfers is style. The old mine cut in Swift's ring, the yellow gold Cyrus and Markle both chose, the hidden halo under Gaga's oval, the bezel with four corner claws, the hand-engraved band, the trilogy with two meaningful side stones: every one of those is a decision about how a ring looks and none of them is expensive. They are the reason to look at these photographs at all. What does not transfer is scale. At around $10,000 in Australia a well-cut three carat lab-grown centre stone is a normal order for us, which puts you at Meghan Markle's weight and within half a carat of Miley Cyrus's. Getting to Taylor Swift's eight to ten carats is a different order of magnitude, and on a natural stone of the quality reported it is a house deposit. Neither of those numbers is a target. They are just where the line sits.If a photograph of a famous ring is what got you started, bring it in. A picture tells us more in ten seconds about what someone actually wants than a page of specifications does, and working out which parts of it are affordable and which parts are the carat weight is most of what a first conversation is.
